Raising Boys

Firstly, we take our hats off to you for the fantastic job you do in raising boys alone. Let’s face it - boys are very loving and great fun but they can also be hard work! Often busy, full of ideas, sometimes monosyllabic; other times can’t shut them up. It’s a roller coaster!

Something Missing

What Mums tell us about raising boys alone is that despite their best efforts at doing ‘boy’ stuff’, something is still missing. They see a hunger in their boys – a need for recognition from a man. We believe these instincts are right. Generally speaking, women can’t model ‘maleness’ and above all else, that’s how boys learn. They need a good male role model to guide them into manhood.

A good man

Our job is to recruit and rigorously screen volunteer men from the community to become mentors to your boys (aged 7-14). We spend time with you and your boy before carefully matching him with a Big Buddy, who’ll show up weekly for at least a year in your boy’s life and model what it means to be a good man. He’ll do this through play and activities but mainly, he’ll model through being his authentic self – through his male ‘mana’.

Solid results

You’ll see fantastic results! The Big Buddy programme has run successfully since 1997. Since then we’ve matched hundreds of boys, with some matches lasting 15 years. Want to know more about the Big Buddy mentoring programme? Go to FAQs.

"I’m ecstatic that Reuben has a Big Buddy, he’s really changed, they really care about each other and they’re a great match. I’m pleased as punch!”

Sarah

"I came across Big Buddy as an alternative to behaviour therapy when my son ran into trouble at school. I realised that the best solution was to give my son what he was in ‘need’ of, rather than single out his behaviour as being problematic. The male support has been the key and Big Buddy has filled an enormous gap by offering my son a positive role model that has impacted his life for the better. As a single parent, I can’t thank you enough.”

Shelley

"A marvellous programme, he gets heaps from having rapport with a man … Big Buddy made a good choice in pairing them together.”
