Brewing up a Dad Bod

Group of men at a brewery.

A great group of Big Buddy supporters recently brewed up an innovative circle of generosity.

It all started when Big Buddy supporter Darren White, a regular at Big Buddy fundraising events, won a special brewing experience at our Big Buddy Night Out auction last year – donated by Black Sands Brewery.

Darren decided to do the unique experience with a group of 10 friends.   The group were all Dads who originally met through their children’s school or football team. In April the group of mates came together at the Black Sands Brewery in West Auckland for the first part of their experience, joined by Big Buddy Chairman Travis Field who supplied food from Fantail & Turtle to match the beer supplied by Black Sands.

The group worked with the Black Sands team and came up with the Hazy IPA beer that they named Dad Bod, which they went on to make 4 kegs of.

The group got together again in May at Fantail & Turtle, located at Goodside in Smales Farm, to sample their brew and enjoy Travis’s team’s hospitality.

Black Sands Brewery in West Auckland was originally founded by three friends – Ian Hebblethwaite, David Holden & Peter Osborne. Today the business is run by father and son, Ian (Dad) & Craig (Son) Hebblethwaite, last year Matt (David’s son) joined the team.

The Black Sands team decided that they would sell the additional kegs to their regular clients in the community for others to enjoy and to fundraise for Big Buddy. The beer was snapped up by Fantail & Turtle, 16Tun, 605, Brewers Co-op and the Piha Bowling Club. Overall the entire experience has raised $3400 for Big Buddy.

More good guys in our village supporting the Big Buddy cause in a way they can. Thank you to Ian, Craig & Matt at Black Sands for a unique opportunity and your desire to continue supporting Big Buddy into the future.

Right now there are around 8,000 boys in New Zealand without fathers in their lives. These boys are navigating the challenges of life without the steady hand of a father to guide them.

With your help, Big Buddy can continue to match young boys with good men to offer friendship, support and a good male role model to look up to.

With 130 young boys currently on our waitlist, your support today is needed more than ever.

Your donation will help build confidence and resilience in the lives of boys whose fathers are not around.
