Every now and then, we hear a story that reminds us why Big Buddy exists. Recently, Alex’s mum shared a copy of a speech he gave at school. Alex is one of our Little Buddies, and when we read it, we knew we had to share it.
It’s honest, heartfelt, and shows the incredible impact a Big Buddy can have. Here’s Alex’s story, in his own words.
Alex’s Speech
Do you know what charity really means? Most people think charity is just about giving money or helping those in need. But to me, charity is so much more. It’s an act of empathy—a way to connect with someone else’s struggles and make a real difference.
Back in 1997, during a men’s group weekend camp, an idea was born. That idea became Big Buddy, a charity that has changed my life.
What is Big Buddy?
Big Buddy is a non-profit organisation that helps boys aged 7–18 who don’t have a father figure in their lives. There are many reasons why boys join Big Buddy—some have lost their dads, some have parents in prison, and others simply have fathers who aren’t around.
I’m lucky to have great male role models like my granddad and Uncle Dave. But not every boy is as fortunate. Big Buddy steps in to fill that gap, connecting boys with positive male mentors who can guide them through life.
My Story
I’m proud to say I’m one of those boys. A few years ago, I was matched with my Big Buddy, Tim. From the very beginning, Tim has been there for me—not just as a mentor, but as a friend.
We’ve spent countless weekends together doing all sorts of things: playing golf, learning how to fix cars, and just talking about life. Tim comes to my sports games, and I go to his kids’ games. It’s a two-way relationship, and over time, our bond has grown stronger. I look forward to many more years of learning and laughter with him.
More Than Just Mentoring
Big Buddy also offers group programmes, and I was lucky to join one. For six weeks, I went on a journey of self-discovery with other boys like me. We did adventure activities, trust exercises, and learned about our emotions. It ended with a three-day survival camp where we cooked over open fires and supported each other through challenges. That experience taught me resilience and teamwork.
Chasing the Fox – A Highlight
Earlier this year, Big Buddy was the principal charity partner for Chasing the Fox, a golf event featuring celebrities. I was honored to be chosen as an ambassador to share my story and help recruit new mentors. I even got to caddy for former All Black Kieran Read and meet other amazing people. Later, I spoke about Big Buddy on TV One – a moment I’ll never forget.
Why Big Buddy Matters
Without Big Buddy, I don’t know where I’d be today. This organisation – and the people behind it – have shaped my life in ways I can’t fully express. From my mum, who got me involved, to Tim, my mentor, and everyone I’ve met along the way, Big Buddy has been a cornerstone of my journey.
One day, I hope to give back by becoming a Big Buddy myself. Because I know firsthand how much this support means to a boy who needs it.
Thank you for hearing my story. If you want to learn more or become a Big Buddy, check out more information here where you could change someone’s life – just like Tim changed mine.
