Building Connections, One Brick at a Time

Our Big and Little Buddies recently had the opportunity to experience Brick Engaged, spending the day building, creating and working together through LEGO®-based activities.

Based in Upper Hutt, Brick Engaged uses the power of LEGO®-based play to create meaningful social connections, build confidence, strengthen communication skills, and support wellbeing in a safe and inclusive environment. Through its programmes, participants are encouraged to learn, collaborate, and develop important life skills while having fun.

This opportunity came about through Big Buddy Matt Newman-Hall, who has been mentoring for the past 10 years and still spends time with his former Little Buddy, now 21 years old.

Matt’s son attends the Brick Engaged programme, and while helping founder Dan Mulholland secure new premises, he shared the impact of the Big Buddy mentoring programme. Inspired by the difference mentoring makes in the lives of boys, Dan generously offered to host a session for our Big and Little Buddies, giving them the chance to experience Brick Engaged firsthand.

Dan founded Brick Engaged after seeing the positive impact that LEGO® play can have on social connection, learning, and wellbeing. Today, the organisation runs a range of programmes focused on building friendships, confidence, social skills, and meaningful interactions through creative play.

For our matches, the day was about much more than building with bricks. It was an opportunity to work together, share ideas, solve challenges, and strengthen the bonds that make mentoring so valuable.

We are incredibly grateful to Dan and the Brick Engaged team for their generosity and support in hosting our group and creating such a positive experience for everyone involved.
