Since 2023, Big Buddy has partnered with Hillary Outdoors to provide an unforgettable adventure for boys aged 13-17 in the 1:1 mentoring programme. In January 2024, we took 18 boys, and in January 2025, 20 boys embarked on a 5-day journey to Hillary Outdoors Tongariro, accompanied by two Big Buddy staff members, Mark and Shane. This incredible experience was made possible through a sponsorship from Hillary Outdoors, and support coming from Big Buddy and caregiver contributions.
I am so grateful for the opportunity I was given by big buddy and Hillary outdoor to attend the camp. It wouldn’t have been something I would have had a chance to do without them. This is one of the most positive experiences I have had, it has made me realize how much I love outdoor pursuits and want to continue on the path to possibly a job in the industry.
Not only was I able to experience new activites I also was rewarded my supporting other kids achieve their goals.
I can’t say enough about how lucky I was to be part of that camp and I thank everyone involved in making it happen.

Younger Group – Shane’s Week in Review

The boys navigated through dense bush, hiked alongside streams, waded through water, and tackled rock climbing and abseiling challenges. Kayaking on the Tongariro River was a highlight, with one boy showing immense courage by making a daring cliff jump that impressed everyone. They also took on high ropes, trekked to 1300m above sea level, and even explored the Okupata Caves before embarking on a 14km overnight expedition through the Taurewa Forest. A breathtaking sunset abseil over the forest marked a perfect conclusion to their journey.
Throughout the week, the boys developed key life skills—embracing discomfort, facing fears, and forming deep bonds with each other. Homesickness was a challenge for some, but overcoming it brought a sense of pride and emotional resilience. By the end of the trip, every boy could name at least one new friend they had made, reinforcing the power of this experience.

Older Group – Mark’s Week in Review

The week at Hillary Outdoors was filled with challenges, teamwork, and personal growth. It began with a road trip that included a detour, some car sickness, and plenty of banter.
Mornings were a whirlwind of wake-ups, breakfast, and sandwich-making, with some boys stepping up to help. Team-building exercises highlighted communication struggles, but over time, the boys learned to work together. Activities like high ropes, caving, and a mountain trek pushed them out of their comfort zones, with moments of fear, encouragement, and breakthroughs. The trek to an alpine waterfall was both physically demanding and rewarding, while the caving expedition brought laughter, frustration, and awe as the boys navigated narrow tunnels and underground streams. Floating down a creek led to a stunning ravine, reinforcing their bond and resilience.
The overnight canoe expedition was a major milestone. The boys showed improved teamwork while rafting their canoes, and on the island, they cooked together and reflected on their experiences. An open and honest sharing circle revealed how much they had grown, both individually and as a group. Sleeping on the ground proved challenging, and a surprise visit from a rat provided extra entertainment.
By the final day, exhaustion was setting in, but there was a sense of accomplishment. Packing up was chaotic, with lost socks and last-minute scrambles, but the goodbyes were filled with hugs, laughter, and exchanged contacts. The week had united a group of strangers into a tight-knit team, leaving them tired yet fulfilled as they returned home with new friendships, memories, and personal achievements.
What I really liked about this camp is that it’s very good for young boys with not much confidence and boys who want to learn and get outside and do activities. For me personally it was an amazing experience and a great character development camp. I got out if my comfort zone and tried a lot of new things thanks to Big Buddy sponsoring my trip. I am very grateful that I got the opportunity to do this.
