One of the beautiful things about Big Buddy is watching bonds grow through shared experiences—especially the kind that are filled with adventure and unforgettable firsts. Recently, Big Buddy Jamie and Little Buddy Jordan set off on a trip to Queenstown, and what unfolded was nothing short of magic.
Taking Off: Destination South Island
Thanks to Jamie’s work as a flight attendant, he had access to some great travel perks, including discounted flights. After chatting with Jordan about places he’d never been, they landed on Queenstown—a stunning South Island destination that Jetstar flies to and, more importantly, somewhere Jordan had never visited.
Up, Up, and Away – A Helicopter Ride to Remember
One of the standout highlights of the trip was a spontaneous act of generosity. Jamie reached out to Simon at Helicopter Line Queenstown to ask if they offered any discounts as I was bringing down my Little Buddy. What happened next was incredible—Simon offered them a free flight when a space became available.
It was Jordan’s very first time in a helicopter—and even more exciting—his first time seeing and touching snow. Soaring above the breathtaking Queenstown landscape was an experience neither of them will forget, and a photo of him mid-takeoff captures the pure joy on Jordan’s face.
Rugby, Ziplines, and Unforgettable Moments
Another highlight of the trip was catching a rugby match in Christchurch, where they saw Moana Pasifika beat the Crusaders on home ground. It was Jordan’s first time at a live rugby game, and he soaked up every moment of the electric atmosphere.
The duo also braved a zipline adventure, another first for Jordan.
“I’ve always wanted to go on a zipline—I even tried to make one in the backyard before!” – Jordan
Flying above the trees at high speed was thrilling, and he wasn’t even nervous. In fact, he said the zipline and helicopter ride were the best parts of the whole trip.
“I think we have a great relationship,” Jamie said. “It’s not about spoiling him, it’s about giving him experiences he wouldn’t otherwise have—and showing him something outside the ordinary.”
Beyond the Adventures
While the activities were unforgettable, what truly made the trip special was the connection between Jamie and Jordan.
“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time as a big buddy. It is super rewarding and incredible how in 18 months Jordan and I have formed an amazing bond.”
Jordan echoed the sentiment:
. “Going on the trip with Jamie was so exciting. I like spending time with him because he’s fun to be around. He teaches me to be brave, try new things—even foods I think will be gross! Having a Big Buddy is like having a big brother who wants to hang out with me.”
From Mum’s Perspective
Having Jamie as Jordans Big Buddy has been a truly positive and life changing experience for both Jordan and myself. Since being matched, Jamie has become an important and reliable presence in Jordan’s life. He spends quality time with him, introduces him to new experiences, and connects with him in a way that’s meaningful and unique to a male mentoring relationship.
Jamie is friendly, easy to talk to, and genuinely makes time for Jordan, which means so much to us. Jordan absolutely loves spending time with him and always looks forward to their catch ups.
We are so grateful to the Big Buddy programme for bringing Jamie into our lives. He’s had a lasting, positive impact on Jordan and on me as a parent. His presence has helped shape Jordan’s confidence and outlook, and for that, we can’t thank him and the programme enough.
A Lasting Impact
From snow-capped mountains to rugby stadiums and high-flying zipline thrills, this trip was packed with firsts. But as Jordan himself said when asked what the best part was:
“Spending time with you.” – Jordan (LB)
And that’s what Big Buddy is all about.
