We Raised $28,000 in Tauranga!
What an incredible day we had on Thursday 22nd May at our Charity Lunch at The Surf Club Mt Maunganui! Thanks to the generosity of the local community, we’re excited to share that we raised an amazing $28,000 to support Big Buddy mentoring in the Western Bay of Plenty.
The sun was shining, the kai was delicious, and the stories were powerful — it was a day full of connection, community spirit, and meaningful impact. Thank you to Jen Scoular, Tauranga City Council Deputy Mayor for opening our inaugural event and supporting the mahi our Big Buddies do in the Tauranga region, and to Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Te Rangi Iwi Trust for your presence and support.
A massive thank you goes out to everyone who attended our very first Big Buddy fundraiser in the Bay of Plenty — and an extra big shoutout to those of you who rallied your friends, whānau, and colleagues to fill tables and show up in force. Your enthusiasm and belief in our kaupapa set the tone for an unforgettable afternoon. Launching a new event in a new region is no small feat, and your support made it not only possible but powerful. You brought the energy, the generosity, and the heart — and because of you, we’re now able to grow Big Buddy mentoring in this community.
Mentorship in Action – From the Field to Real Life
A huge highlight was hearing from former All Blacks Karl Te Nana and Mils Muliaina, who both shared personal reflections on the mentors who shaped them during their formative years. As young men coming up in the world of professional sport, both Karl and Mils spoke about the life-changing value of having solid role models — people who believed in them, kept them grounded, and offered guidance at critical crossroads.
Their stories were honest, humble, and deeply relatable. They reminded us that whether it’s on the field or in everyday life, every young person benefits from having someone who simply shows up. Their words echoed the heart of what Big Buddy is all about — the quiet power of consistent, caring male mentorship.

A Mum’s Journey Through Loss and Support
One of the most emotional moments of the day came from Sarsha Healey, a courageous and devoted mum who has been part of the Big Buddy whānau for more than 15 years.
Sarsha spoke movingly about raising two boys on her own, after the breakdown of her marriage — and the loss of her ex-husband, which left her boys without a father. Thankfully, her older boy was matched with a Big Buddy, who immediately stepped in to provide support, stability, and a strong male presence in his life when it was needed most.
Sarsha’s story touched every person in the room. Her bravery in sharing such a personal journey reminded us of the profound difference the Big Buddy programme makes for families navigating tough times.
You can watch the full recording of Sarsha’s powerful speech here: Sarsha’s Story – it’s a must-see for anyone wanting to understand the real, lasting impact of mentorship.
