Big Buddy Day Out – Hamilton & Tauranga 2026

On Sunday 29th March 2026, our Hamilton and Tauranga Big Buddy whānau came together for a memorable Big Buddy Day Out at the beautiful Lake Karapiro, hosted at Epworth Camp.

Events like these are a powerful reminder of why mentoring boys in New Zealand matters — creating space for connection, confidence, and positive role modelling outside everyday routines.

A Warm Welcome by the Lake

The day began under a layer of early morning mist, with Little Buddies, Big Buddies, mums and caregivers arriving to a warm welcome. We were also joined by one of our Group Programme facilitators and his whānau, creating a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere from the start.

It was a great opportunity for everyone to reconnect, meet others from the Hamilton and Tauranga Big Buddy community, and ease into the day together.

Getting Out on the Water

After settling in, the group made their way down to the lake for kayaking. Buddies split into two groups, ensuring everyone had time out on the water. Each group enjoyed around 30–45 minutes paddling across the lake, sharing laughs, encouragement, and teamwork before swapping over.

Activities like this are a great way for mentors and boys to build trust and confidence side by side — a core part of what Big Buddy mentoring is all about.

BBQ, Games, and Downtime

By midday, the fog had lifted and the sun came out just in time for a relaxed BBQ lunch. While food was cooking, there was plenty happening onshore, with casual games of cricket, volleyball, and backyard-style activities bringing everyone together.

These unstructured moments are often where the strongest connections are made — giving boys the chance to socialise, try new things, and simply be themselves in a supportive environment.

Wrapping Up with a Splash

In the afternoon, the group headed up to the swimming pool to cool off. Buddies continued hanging out, playing, and enjoying quality time together before the day wrapped up around 2pm.

Why Days Like This Matter

The Big Buddy Day Out in Hamilton and Tauranga was simple but special — a day full of shared experiences, outdoor fun, and meaningful connection. For many boys, these moments contribute to stronger self-belief, better resilience, and a sense of belonging.

We’re incredibly grateful to our dedicated mentors who volunteer their time to support boys across New Zealand, and to the families who make days like this possible.
