There’s nothing like teaching young men to reach for the pinnacles – literally! Auckland BB extraordinaire Jim Eyre decided to take his not one – but two – LBs on an intrepid hike up to the Pinnacles in the Kaueranga Valley, Thames, a couple of weeks back. His mate Ken Costello tagged along with Nehemiah Ulavale (15) and Humphrey Yuan (17).
Jim has been matched with LB Nehemiah for six years and took on LB Humphrey a few back as well when his BB became ill. Jim says the hike is well worth the effort: “At first my knees protested going up some rock steps but eventually the pain dissipated.
I would recommend hiking up the main track rather than the Billy Goat unless you are extremely fit. It is doable in a day but when you go that far, you may as well stay a night or more and kick back and relax with the natives.” The intrepid hikers stayed in a DOC lodge and rewarded themselves with a refreshing swim in the Kaueranga Valley stream at the finish line. Good work Mr Eyre! Hope you enjoy a well-deserved break.
